子张问行。子曰，言忠信，行笃敬，虽蛮貊之邦行矣。言不忠信，行不笃敬，虽州里行乎哉。立，则见其参于前也，在舆，则见其倚于衡也。夫然后行。子张书诸绅。

子张问怎样才能行得通。孔子说：说话忠诚守信，行事笃实恭敬，即使到了偏远的蛮貊之地，也能行得通。说话不忠诚守信，行事不笃实恭敬，即使在本乡本土，又怎能行得通呢？站立时，就仿佛看见忠信笃敬这几个字显现在面前；坐在车上时，就仿佛看见它们靠在车前的横木上。做到这样，然后才能到处行得通。子张把这些话写在腰间的大带上。
